Happy Fathers day this Sunday. I wanted to share some of my memories of my Grandpa Jones:Eddie Lee Jones. I'm not sure if anyone reads these blogs anymore but I love learning about our heritage. So here goes nothing.
I remember that he used to always wear overalls.
I remember he liked to eat milk and bread and onions.
He was really good at growing melons. Watermelons, mush melons and cantelope.
When I was little I used to climb up on his lap and he would always give me a big hug.
He enjoyed eating popcorn on Sundays in fact when we went to visit him once in his later years in St. George I remember we took him popcorn.
He used to slice his corn off the cob with a knife. I always thought this was an interesting thing to watch.
I remember his false teeth. That I was impressed he could take his teeth out of his mouth.when I was little. We always thought it was some kind of magic trick.
He was a farmer and raised sheep and cows. I remember that he taught me how to milk a cow.
I remember he taught me if I got lost on the trail on a hot day that you could always suck on a rock because rocks contain moisture.
I tried and tried to learn to tie my shoes but everyone was to fast at showing me. Grandpa Jones went at a slower pace and he taught me to tie my shoes.
I barely remember when him and Grandma Jones went on their mission to Kentucky.
I remember that he said long prayers I thought. I heard that this kind of got passed down through generations.
I remember riding in the car with him to Mesquite once. Jamie and I were little and he let us comb his wavy white hair.
It seems like him and Grandma always had evening meals early so he could go to bed and get up early.
I remember dad told me once never to talk to Grandpa Jones about directions North South East and West. I guess he got them kind of confused.
I remember once that Kent got stung by a yellow jacket twice in the same place climbing over and back across a fence. Grandpa took him and put something on it and it worked. Took the sting out and healed it up quick.
I remember a story of him and my grandma Vera riding together to an important event like a wedding or something and they missed the turn because they got busy talking.
Kent and Grandpa Jones share the same middle name. Lee.
I remember one time it was time to sheer Grandpa Jones's sheep and dad and Uncle Ray were helping him. I got an opportunity to watch before they sheered the sheep and see first hand how a sheep is "dumb" to its sheerer. Having this experience helps me to liken those scriptures to my experience and helps me to understand those scriptures better. It was a really neat opportunity to watch.
As he got older he got Alzhimers. He went to Missouri and lived with Ray and Shelia for a while.
He always wore a cap on his head when he went outside but would take it off inside.
Thats about all of my memories for now. If I think of more I will add them here.
